Finding Confidence After Breast Cancer: Libby’s Story with Filly Rose
October is Bra Recycling Month, and this year’s theme is Empowering Lives Beyond Circumstances. As part of this movement, we’re sharing the voices of women who show what resilience really looks like.
Today we hear from Libby Basile, founder of Filly Rose Bra Studio in Madison, Connecticut — and a breast cancer survivor.

From Editor to Bra Fitter
Before opening her studio, Libby worked as an editor-in-chief in the intimate apparel industry. She spent over a decade learning what makes bras work for different body shapes — and what leaves women frustrated.
At Filly Rose, she brings that knowledge directly to her clients.
“Most women come in nervous,” she says. “But when they put on a bra that finally fits, their whole face lights up. That moment is why I do this.”
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
In March 2024, after her first mammogram, Libby was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction, a journey that reshaped her relationship with bras completely.
“I woke up from surgery with tissue expanders and a concave chest. It was scary. But as the process went on, I began to see myself again. Putting beautiful bras on my new body was healing. Instead of focusing on what I lost, I focused on what still made me feel confident.”
Why Fit Education Matters
Libby’s mission goes beyond helping women find a size. She works to break down myths that have left generations of women wearing the wrong bras.
“Cup size is just a ratio, not your identity,” she explains. “The right bra can completely change how you feel about yourself.”
Giving Back Through Bra Recycling
As a Bra Recycling Ambassador, Libby collects gently used bras from her clients to support survivors of breast cancer and domestic violence.
“I’ve seen women walk in with bras they’ve worn for years, tied together just to keep them up. When they finally get a bra that fits, their posture changes, their whole demeanor changes. It makes a difference.”
